Active student engagement is a critical factor in the success of language
learning, particularly in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) contexts where
students often face additional challenges in mastering a new language. Teachers
play a pivotal role in active student engagement by employing various instructional
strategies that cater to the diverse needs of their students. This study aimed to
investigate the strategies used by EFL teachers for active student engagement in
English classes at SMPN 5 Banjarbaru.
This research used a qualitative approach. The design of this research was
descriptive. The data were collected using observations, interviews, and
documentation. The researcher used data triangulation to show the data
trustworthiness. Through observations and interviews, four primary strategies
were identified: (1) visual-based instruction, (2) writing in class, (3) cooperative
learning, and (4) roleplay and games. The findings indicate that these teacher
strategies foster active engagement among students, address various learning
challenges, and enhance the overall effectiveness of English teaching at
SMPN 5 Banjarbaru.
Students require engaging strategies from teachers for fostering active
engagement in the classroom. This active engagement not only enhances their
understanding of the material but also contributes to a more dynamic and interactive
learning environment. By implementing diverse and effective teaching strategies,
teachers can better meet the needs of their students and encourage a deeper
commitment to their education. It is suggested that teachers continue to refine and
diversify their strategies, combining them in innovative ways to further enhance
student interest and engagement in learning English.
