This study aims to identify the writing strategies employed by high-GPA students in the Creative Writing course at Lambung Mangkurat University, class of 2021. The concept of self-regulated learning has been receiving increasing attention in educational research, particularly in the teaching of writing, as individual initiative and strategic behavior have been shown to significantly contribute to learning outcomes. By observing how high-achieving students manage their writing processes, this research seeks to provide deeper insights into effective writing strategies.
This study used a qualitative method with data collected through interviews. The research subjects were students with high GPAs who had completed the Creative Writing course. The collected data were first reduced and then analyzed to identify the types of writing strategies the participants applied in their creative writing processes.
The findings indicate that eight writing strategies were used by high-achieving students. Among these, text processing, idea planning, goal-oriented monitoring, interest enhancement, and emotional control were the most prominently and consistently used by both students, contributing significantly to students’ writing quality and performance. Notably, while feedback handling was present, students showed a strong preference for working independently. It is recommended that Creative Writing students adopt and adapt these strategies based on personal learning preferences and classroom contexts to improve their creative writing performance.
