The shift to Kurikulum Merdeka underscores the need to evaluate textbook integration of the national character framework, Profil Pelajar Pancasila. This study addresses a gap by analyzing the Pathway to English Tingkat Lanjut for Grade XII, a commercially published but widely used resource often funded via Dana BOS. Its specific integration of all six character values remains unexamined. Using qualitative document analysis by Bowen (2009), data were systematically examined via a content analysis checklist based on the official Kurikulum Merdeka framework, with triangulation through teacher interviews and observation.
Results show all six values are present but unevenly emphasized. Mutual Cooperation, Critical Thinking, Creative, and Global Diversity are strongly integrated through collaborative and project-based tasks. On the contrary, Faithful, Devoted to God Almighty, and Noble Morality is limited to only environmental and civic themes with its faith-based element absent, while Independent appears less frequently.
The study concludes that while the textbook strongly fosters collaboration and criticality, it requires teacher and school supplementation to address gaps in spiritual and personal morality. For teacher development, findings highlight the need for skill in material adaptation. For publishers, stress the necessity for balancing character integration comprehensively. Ultimately, this research provides ELT stakeholders with evidence to optimize textbook use, ensuring alignment with national character education goals.
