ABSTRACT

Background: Nutritional status is one of the important factors influencing children's growth and development, including the development of permanent teeth. Poor nutritional status may affect the formation and maturation of dental hard tissues, potentially leading to delayed tooth development. Permanent canines play an important role in occlusion, mastication, and esthetics. Studies investigating the relationship between nutritional status and the developmental stage of permanent canines in elementary school children are still limited. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between nutritional status and the developmental stage of permanent canines in students aged 7–9 years at SDN Sungai Andai 4 Banjarmasin. Methods: This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design involving 33 students selected by simple random sampling. Nutritional status was assessed using WHO BMI-for-age z-scores through the AnthroPlus application, while canine developmental stage was assessed from panoramic radiographs using the Nolla method. Data were analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test. Results: Most students had normal nutritional status (54.5%), and canine developmental stage was predominantly at Nolla stage 6–7. Spearman's test showed a statistically significant, very strong positive correlation between nutritional status and canine developmental stage (rs = 0.833; p < 0.001). Conclusion: There was a significant, very strong positive correlation between nutritional status and permanent canine developmental stage; better nutritional status was associated with a more advanced developmental stage of the permanent canines.
