ABSTRACT
Background: Acrylic resin is the most used denture base material due to its favorable physical and esthetic properties. One of its important mechanical properties, the modulus of elasticity, can be affected by denture cleaning procedures. Small white ginger (Zingiber officinale var. amarum) contains phenolic compounds that have potential as a natural denture cleanser. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effect of brushing with small white ginger extract toothpaste on the modulus of elasticity of heat-cured acrylic resin plates.Method: This laboratory true experimental study employed a post-test only control group design. Eighteen heat-cured acrylic resin plates were randomly assigned into three groups: small white ginger extract toothpaste, calcium carbonate toothpaste, and distilled water. Brushing was performed using a modified electric toothbrush for 22 minutes. The modulus of elasticity was measured using a Universal Testing Machine. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene’s test, One-Way ANOVA, and the Bonferroni post hoc test. Results: The mean modulus of elasticity values were 1158.73 MPa for the small white ginger extract toothpaste group, 1498.57 MPa for the calcium carbonate toothpaste group, and 1598.49 MPa for the distilled water group. One-Way ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference among the groups (p = 0.001). The Bonferroni post hoc test showed significant differences between the small white ginger extract toothpaste group and both the calcium carbonate toothpaste group (p = 0.006) and the distilled water group (p = 0.001), while no significant difference was found between the calcium carbonate toothpaste and distilled water groups (p = 0.798). Conclusion: Brushing with small white ginger extract toothpaste lowered the modulus of elasticity of heat-cured acrylic resin plates compared to calcium carbonate toothpaste and distilled water.
