Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills in English language learning, specifically in understanding narrative texts. However, many eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin still struggle to understand narrative texts. Indicate the need for appropriate teaching techniques to support students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effect of the Herringbone Technique on eighth-grade students' understanding of narrative texts at SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin.
This research used a quantitative quasi-experimental design involving two classes: an experimental class and a control class. The sample in this research were forty-eight eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin during the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected using reading comprehension tests administered as pre-tests and post-tests. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity tests, and the Independent Samples t-test via IBM SPSS version 31 to determine the effect of the treatment on students' reading comprehension.
The findings of this research showed that the students in the experimental class performed better than those in the control class. The average score of the experimental class increased from 65.63 in the pre-test to 78.44 in the post-test, while the control class increased from 59.16 to 70.93. In addition, the Independent Samples T-Test yielded a p-value of 0.019, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Herringbone Technique had a positive effect on the eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts at SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin.
