ABSTRACT
High unemployment rates create alienation among workers. The Ministry of Manpower (Kemennaker) reported that 77,965 people were laid off from January to December 2024 (Kemnaker, 2025). Furthermore, this situation turns workers into tools of exploitation by capital owners. By codifying labor in a reductive manner viewing workers solely based on production output and negating their human value (Ibrahim and Akhmad, 2014). Music serves a communicative function by conveying critical messages through song lyrics. This study aims to reveal the representations of criticism of capitalism found in the lyrics of the song “Bapak Bos (Yang Lotnok)” by Jason Ranti. It employs the analysis methods of Miles and Huberman as well as Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis. The results indicate that these representations emerge from Jesse Delia’s constructivist theory and Kenneth Burke’s theory of identification. The formation of these critical representations of capitalism in the song stems from the presence of complex and integrated messages. Additionally, it is due to material, idealistic, and formal identification. Furthermore, the representation of criticism of capitalism in the song lyrics is embedded in denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings.
