This research was conducted to describe the ability of ninth-grade students of SMPN 4 Alalak in writing a procedure text by using quantitative approach. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the students of ninth-grade of SMPN 4 Alalak. There were 32 students from class IX E chosen by using cluster random sampling as the sample of this research. In obtaining the data, the researcher used writing test as the research instrument.The test was analyzed by two raters.

Based on the result of the test, it could be seen that the ability of the ninth-grade students of SMPN 4 Alalak in writing a procedure text was fair. It was also discovered that students’ problems in writing procedure text were mainly in word choice / vocabulary and grammar aspects. It implied that many students many students made many misuses of vocabularies or word forms. Consequently, their ideas cannot be conveyed clearly. Their writings also showed frequent errors of impropriate use of word choices and verb tenses.

Finally, the teachers are advised to focus in improving the students’ mastery in writing by giving them more opportunities to practice their skill in writing. The students are suggested to solve their problems in writing by practicing to write more and enrich their vocabulary related to the use of appropriate word choice.
